Stockton, Calif. The California Sunbirds continued their hot start as they captured game one of their three game series and double-header, 4-2, versus the visiting Texas Thunder on Saturday, June 5. With the win the Sunbirds improve to 3-1 on the season while the Thunder fall to 2-2.
The Thunder struck first in the game, getting to California starter, Amy Kyler, for one run in the third inning. After retiring the first two hitters she faced, Kyler gave up a double to Erin Evans who came into score on a single to center by Ryan Realmuto.
The Sunbirds wasted no time responding, denting the plate twice in the bottom of the inning on a two out double to right off the bat of Jaime Foutch. The double drove in Kellyn Tate and Kim Ogee who had reached base on a single and fielders choice respectively.
After giving up the tying run in the fifth inning on an unearned run, California took control of the game in the sixth inning as both Julie Marshall and Brandy Thurman went deep off Texas starter, Lindsay Chouinard. Marshall led off the inning with a blast to center field to break the tie, eventually becoming the game-winner. The homerun was the first homerun in Sunbird history. Two batters later, Thurman teed off on another Chouinard fastball, driving the pitch over the left field wall for her first hit of the season in only her second at-bat.
Amy Kyler picked up her second win of the season for the sunbirds going seven innings while only giving up one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and only one walk.
Chouinard picked up the loss for the Thunder going five and a third innings while giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the fifth inning due to a city-wide power outage in the Stockton area. The game will resume prior to tomorrow night's regularly scheduled game at 7:05pm PDT.
