HOUSTON, TX The Texas Thunder and visiting Akron Racers had to deal with Mother Nature, and a one-hour rain delay before getting under way in the rubber match of their three-game series in National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) action.
Once the clouds cleared and action began, Thursdays game was all about the pitchers. Nikki Myers (Florida Atlantic), Radara McHugh (North Carolina) and Danielle Henderson (UMass) all saw action in the circle for the Racers. While former Nebraska University standout and Big XII Player of the Year, Peaches James, threw for the Thunder.
The three Racers pitchers scattered six hits through eight innings, while striking out five. James held the Racers batters at bay all night, allowing only one hit and four base runners over eight innings. James struck out 13 Racers en route to the 1-0 eight-inning win. The win also gave the Thunder the series win over the Racers.
The Thunder was led at the plate by for Texas State star Kristen Zaleski, who went 2-for-5 on the night, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Zaleski came to the plate with the bases loaded and two away, and she hit a hard drive to the Akron 2nd baseman, Brandi Stuart (Florida State). The ball proved to be too hot to handle and James came in to score the games only run.
Texas will now head on the road to play the California Sunbirds in Stockton, Calif. in a double-header on June 5th. The third and final game of the series in California will be played on Sunday, June 6th.
The Thunder will return home Wednesday, June 9th to take on the NY/NJ Juggernaut in a three-game series at Cougar Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. The first game of the series is scheduled to begin at 7:35 pm CDT.
