Glory Shuts Out Thunder 3-0; Clinch League's First Playoff Berth

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Washington Glory clinched a spot in the NPF playoffs after shutting out the Rockford Thunder, 3-0, at the George Mason Softball Complex on Friday night. A pair of solo home runs by Kelly Kretschman and Nicole Barber, both their first of the season, and another dominating performance by Desiree Serrano, provided the spark the Glory would need to get the win.

There was no score until the top of the fourth when Kretschman took a 2-2 offering from Serena Settlemier over the right field fence. Settlemier would get over that quickly as she retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

Washington would add an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI double by Catalina Morris. Jessica Moore had led off the inning being plunked on a full count, and promptly stole second. Morris' double to the gap in left center came on a 1-2 offering.

Barber would add another run for the Glory in the sixth with a solo home run of her own on the first pitch delivered by Settlemier.

The Glory only connected for five hits on the day; however, the first three hits went for extra bases and provided all three runs. Oli Keohohou and Nichole Thompson also singled on the day for the first place Glory.

Serrano (16-3) keeps making her push for NPF Pitcher of the Year as she recorded her league leading 16th win and 11th complete game. The former Sun Devil also leads the NPF in starts (21), innings (127), and strikeouts looking (32). Serrano pitched seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits and striking three, while walking none.

Settlemier (10-7) received the loss despite giving up just four hits in 5.1 innings of work. The former Jayhawk struck out six and did not issue a walk. Abbie Sims who was announced as the starting pitcher took the circle with one out in the sixth, allowed just the single to Thompson, and struck out one.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow night at the George Mason Softball Complex at 7:05 pm. Tickets are still available for the game three of the series but are going fast. Fans may purchase tickets by calling 703.362.4464 or they may buy them at the gate.
