Washington Takes Series Finale with Racers

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Washington Glory (15-5) took three out of four games against the Akron Racers (10-6) after taking the final game, 3-2 on Monday night at the George Mason Softball Complex. With the game deadlocked at 2, Nichole Thompson drove in the game winner in the bottom of the fifth, and fellow former Sun Devil, Desiree Serrano held on to record her league leading eighth win of the season.

Like in the past few games, the Racers took an early lead as starting pitcher Jamee Juarez helped her own cause with a two-run homer in the third. Ianeta Lei scored on the play after singling to left in the previous at bat.

Washington cut the 2-0 deficit in half in their half of the third on a single by Nicole Barber. LaDonia Hughes led off the inning with a single to right, and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Jessica Moore. Barber then roped a single to centerfield, while Hughes was held up at third. However, the throw into the infield was wild, which allowed Hughes to score.

Catalina Morris hit her second home run in as many games with a solo shot in the fourth to tie the game.

The Glory took the outright lead in the fifth on Thompson's gapper to left center. Barber reached earlier in the inning with an infield single, and quickly stole second base. With two outs, Thompson roped her league-leading fifth double of the season to left center, scoring the former Georgia Bulldog from second.

Serrano (8-3) received the win with the complete game allowing just two runs on seven hits and walking none. Juarez was credited with the loss with after allowing just three runs on six hits, and striking out seven.

The Glory will host the Michigan Ice in a four game series, starting Thursday, July 5 at 7:05 pm at the George Mason Softball Complex. Tickets are still avaliable at www.washingtonglory.com. Fans can also purchase tickets at the stadium or by calling 703.362.4464.
