ROCKFORD, Ill. For the second straight game the Rockford Thunder shut out Team Venezuela, this time winning 7-0 behind a complete game effort from rookie Abbie Sims.
The two teams went scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Erin Evans delivered the first run of the game. With two outs and a runner on second base, Evans hit a looping line drive to right field to score Jessica Williams who scored earlier in the inning.
Rockford (10-2) would score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to three more hits. Kim Wendland and Serena Settlemier singled to start the frame and they advanced on a successful sacrifice bunt by Amanda Williams. Wendland scored on a single by De De Justice and A. Williams would eventually score on an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Lindsay Gardner.
The big story of the night was rookie pitcher Abbie Sims. Sims, who improved to 3-0 on the season, was dominant all night, as she allowed just two singles in the game.
Sims recorded five strikeouts in the contest and lowered her ERA to 1.25 and is now amongst the league leaders in wins, strikeouts and earned run average.
The Thunder was without Cat Osterman, Amanda Freed and Mackenzie Vandergeest for the second straight game on Wednesday night. The three players are currently participating in National Team tryout camp in Chula Vista, Calif. and are expected to rejoin the team in time for the series with the Chicago Bandits.
