Arizona Blanks Thunder to Win 3-0

Game Box Score

LEAGUE CITY, Texas – After taking game one of the series with Arizona on Wednesday night, the Texas Thunder had difficulties getting things going on Thursday, as they were shut out 3-0 by Leslie Wolfe and the Heat.

Texas (9-5) couldn’t get anything going all night off Wolfe. The right-hander mixed her pitches well and hit her spots holding the powerful Thunder offense to just three hits, two of which came on back-to-back singles by Karrie Rider and Kim Nesloney in the second inning. The final hit for Texas didn’t come until Raquel Spencer led off the fifth inning with a single.

“Leslie was tough tonight with all of her pitches,” said Thunder second baseman Lindsay Gardner. “She hit her spots very well and because of that we weren’t able make good contact all night.”

Arizona’s (6-8) offense wasn’t much better in the early parts of the game. The Thunder’s Amanda Freed held the Heat without a hit for the first 5 1/3 innings on Thursday, while walking three over the same stretch.

Arizona’s first hit came on a bloop single by Heather Scaglione that landed just of reach of Gardner. Scaglione’s single was the first of three straight hits for the Heat leading to their first run of the game. The Heat would add two more insurance runs in the seventh inning on three more hits and a walk.

Freed (1-1) pitched six innings in the game for Texas allowing all three runs on five hits, while striking out just two. Nicole Neuerburg came in to relieve Freed in the seventh inning and recorded the final three outs.

Rookie Serena Settlemier is scheduled to take the mound on Friday night for the Thunder. Arizona’s starter will most-likely be a game-time decision.

Games three (Friday) and four (Saturday) of the series will be played at Collins Park (6727 Cypresswood Drive) in Spring, Texas. Friday night’s game will be played at the regularly scheduled time of 7:05 p.m., while Saturday night’s game has been pushed back to 7:35 p.m.
