Defense Lifts Heat Over Riptide

Game Box Score

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat defeated the New England Riptide tonight at Hi Corbett Field by a score of 3-0. Leslie Wolfe tossed a complete game shutout and the Heat defense made spectacular play after spectacular play to preserve the victory.

Leslie Wolfe and Mariangee Bogado toed the rubber tonight for their respective teams, with Wolfe coming out on top. Wolfe (1-0), making her first start of the season did not allow a run and surrendered only five hits, walked four and struck out three. Bogado (0-2) took the loss, lasting only three and one-third innings and giving up three runs – two earned – on seven hits. Jocelyn Forest came on in relief and hurled two and two-thirds scoreless innings.

The story of the night was the Heat defense who continued to make amazing plays behind Wolfe. Jackie Coburn, making her first career start at third made a diving catch on a liner by KJ Kelley and barehanded a slow roller to record another out. Catcher Heather Scaglione did her part, throwing out three baserunners in the first three innings. April Valdez, Kaleo Eldredge and LaDonia Hughes came up with spectacular of their own that would save the game for the Heat.

The Heat jumped out quickly in the first thanks in part to a lead-off double by Eldredge. After being sacrificed to third, Nichole Thompson delivered a single up the middle to put the Heat up 1-0. In the second, they loaded up the bases but could not push a run across.

The Riptide could not get anything going off Wolfe, twice ending the first three innings with a runner getting thrown out trying to steal a base. Arizona got another run in the third on an error by KJ Kelley. Nichole Thompson led off the inning with a single and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a fielder’s choice. She came around to score when Scaglione swiped second and the ball careened into center.

In the fourth, Crystal Farley’s RBI single gave the Heat a 3-0 lead. LaDonia Hughes began the inning with a single followed by an April Valdez walk. Hughes would then score two batters later on Farley’s hit.

New England looked to get back in the game in the fourth. After retiring the first two batters, Wolfe walked Tarrah Beyster and gave up back-to-back singles to Lyndsey Angus and Lisa Iancin. With the bases loaded for Kelley, she hit a monster shot to left but Kaleo Eldredge went above to wall to take away a grand slam.

Wolfe continued to shut down the Riptide bats, advancing to the seventh without a threat. However, the Riptide managed to move a runner into scoring position with two outs for Lindy Winkler. Winkler ripped a line drive right back up the middle, but Ladonia Hughes made a terrific diving catch to take away the hit and end the game.

Nichole Thompson and LaDonia Hughes led the Heat offense attack collecting two hits a piece. Thompson also added a RBI and scored her team leading eighth run of the season. Crystal Farley added a hit and a RBI, the first of her career.

Lyndsey Angus had two of the Riptide’s five hits on the night and also reached on a walk. KJ Kelley added a hit of her own and was robbed of two more by the Heat defense.

The Heat and Riptide will play again tomorrow night for the final game of the series. The game starts at 7:00 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
