Racers Blast Three Homeruns

Akron, Ohio – The Akron Racers blasted three home runs and Jamie Southern pitched a complete game in a 10-1 NPF win over New York Friday evening at Firestone Stadium.

Akron improved to 33-7 and moved closer to clinching a berth in the NPF playoffs. The Juggernaut, currently in fourth place, fell to 28-10.

The Racers jumped on New York starter Jodie Cox (12-3) for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Oli Keohohou laced a two-run single and catcher Jenny Topping added a sacrifice fly.

Akron center fielder Iyhia McMichael (inset photo) started the fireworks with her ninth round-tripper of the season, a two-run line shot which just cleared the fence in left-center field. McMichael’s dinger gave Akron a 5-0 advantage. The 2004 NPF Most Valuable Player enjoyed a 3-for-4 game batting and broke the franchise record for runs in a season, surpassing Rashunda Taylor, who scored 48 in 1997. McMichael is at 50 runs scored.

Keohohou crushed her fifth home run of the season in the fifth frame to make it 7-0. Her two-run clout down the left field line plated Crystl Bustos, who had reached on a bunt single.

Bustos, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, greeted New York relief pitcher Alison Higgs with her 18th homer of the season, a three-run bomb to center field in the sixth. Bustos leads the NPF in both home runs and RBI (54).

Southern (6-1) struck out 8, walked three, and yielded just three hits. New York catcher Ryan Realmuto belted her 10th home run of the season in the sixth.
