Freed and Gardner ignite TexasThunder, Sweep Sunbirds

Just 72 short hours prior to this afternoon's game, Texas Thunder and Team USA standout Amanda Freed was taking a long flight home from her team USA competition in Japan. On Sunday, Freed combined with Lindsay Gardner to stymie any hopes of a California Sunbirds victory at The Big League Dreams complex in League City. Amanda was in “gold medal” form this day as she tossed five and a third no- hit innings before giving up a single in the sixth to Garland Cooper. Freed would finish the “rain delayed” performance with a complete game, one hitter, striking out 8 Sunbirds on the afternoon and picking up her 8th win on the season. The Thunder would erupt for six runs in the first two frames with Kim Nesloney starting the attack with a solid single to center off of Sunbird starter Leslie Wolfe, Kristen Zaleski would walk, as would Karrie Rider, loading the bases for Lindsay Gardner. Gardner, then, hit a 2-0 pitch down the left field line scoring all three Thunder base-runners. In the second it was more of the same. Erins Evans would lead off with a single as would Kim Nesloney. Julie Watson layed down a bunt in front of the plate, and a crafty Erin Evans slid wide of the tag by Jamie Wolhbach.,Kristen Zaleski would line a base hit to center driving in Nesloney and Watson.

It was then…..that mother nature would make her voice heard as a line of strong storms would move through the area forcing an hour and 20 minute rain delay. When play restarted, Freed would pick up right where she left off in shutting down the Sunbird attack. The Sunbirds would make a pitching change after the delay bringing in University of Texas sensation Megan Denny to face the Thunder attack. After a Crystal Krebs walk in the fourth, Lindsay Gardner would greet her fellow longhorn by driving a towering homerun to left center on an 0-2 change up from Denny. That would be all the Thunder would need as they rolled to 9-0 victory, winning thier 20th consecutive game and running there season record to 31-8. The Texas Thunder hit the road for a four game set with the Arizona Heat in Tucson next week, but will return to close out the regular season as they face the Akron Racers led by former Team USA’s Olympian slugger, Crystl Bustos along with Kelly Kretschman and Jenny Topping.
