Akron, Ohio Olympic gold medalist Kelly Kretschman had two RBI and scored one run to lead Akron to a 5-1 win over Illinois Sunday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.
The Racers (32-6) picked up one game on first-place Chicago (34-6) in the National Pro Fastpitch standings. The Bandits lost Sunday to New York.
Brandee McArthur (12-2), who had no-hit Illinois on Thursday, gained the victory, working five scoreless innings. Amy Kyler worked the final two frames in relief.
Kretschman, starting in center field in place of injured Iyhia McMichael, singled to right and scored the games first run in the bottom of the third. Akron capitalized on four Cougar miscues and plated two additional runs.
Kretschman then delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth to make it 5-0, Racers.
Akrons only extra base hit came off the bat of designated player Oli Keohohou, who an RBI in the third and a double to left in the fifth.
Catcher Lauren Roney walked and scored in unearned run for Illinois in the seventh. Pitcher Margo Pruis (0-2) took the loss.
The Racers entertain the New York Juggernaut in game one of an important four-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
