LOWELL, MA--The New England Riptide took the fourth and final game of their series with the Long Island Angles last night to complete a four game sweep, this time a 5-0 decision. The Tide scored two in the first thanks to an error by the shortstop Kristin Havdoglous, and three more in the fifth thanks in part to two hit batters and a walk.
Long Island had four hits on the night, all off starter Tammy Nielsen who pitched
the first three innings. Nielsen got in a bit of trouble in the third when Callie
Osborne led off the inning with a single and Havdoglous doubled in the left center
gap leaving runners at second and third with no outs. Nielsen got out of it thanks
to Lisa Iancin who hauled in Deanna Dovak's line drive, leaping way into the air to
prevent the RBI hit. Jocelyn Forest came in in the fourth to pick up the win.
Forest retired all eight batters she faced, five by strikeout. Danielle Henderson
came in with two outs in the sixth to finish things off for the Tide.
The Riptide scored their two in the first when Sarah Andersen worked a one out walk and advanced to second on Kellie Wilkerson's ground out. Jess Merchant promptly singled her home and scored herself on the error.
Things were quiet until the fifth when Kristine Botto led the inning off by beating
out a slap to third base. She went to second on Iancin's sac bunt. Ashley Courtney was hit by a pitch and Andersen's single loaded them up. Wildness continued for Angel pitcher Julie Soviero as she hit Kellie Wilkerson and walked Merchant to account for two more runs. The final run came on Jen Scavone's single.
The Riptide travel to Chicago for a four game series against the Bandits in which
they hope to put themselves into playoff contention. They end the regular season
with five games against the New York Juggernaut in Lowell on August 16th through
August 20th, all games at 7:05
