TUCSON, ARIZ The Arizona Heat completed the sweep of the Mexican National Team in overwhelming fashion with a 14-3 victory Sunday night. Aja Sherman tossed her first complete game of the season to up her record to 3-0. Toni Mascarenas, Felicity Willis and Jackie Coburn each hit a homerun as the Heat pounded out sixteen hits.
Shermans complete game came a day after pitching four strong innings in Saturdays no-decision. She allowed three runs on six hits and a walk. Sherman struck out a season high five batters, including whiffing the side in the seventh.
The Heat used a big first inning to put the Mexican team away early. Led by a Jackie Coburn two run homerun, the Heat scored four runs in the frame. Ladonia Hughes led of with a single and then stole second. Two batters later, Nichole Thompson singled to right scoring Hughes and the Heat led 1-0. Toni Mascarenas followed with a double that scored Thompson. Coburns homerun ended the scoring for the inning and put the Heat up 4-0.
The Mexican National Team battled back in the third, cutting the Heat lead in half. Jessica Navarro battled Sherman for eight pitches before taking the three and two pitch over the leftfield wall. The Heat got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun by Toni Mascarenas.
Mascarenass homerun ignited the Heat bats, as they scored nine more runs over the final three innings. Felicity Willis belted her second homerun of the year to lead off the fourth, and Mascarenas drove in another run with an RBI single. The bottom of the fifth was much of the same, as the Heat produced four more runs. After three singles, Samantha Quintaro hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in her first run of the season. Two batters later, Cheryl Schaefer hit a bases clearing double to push the Heat lead to 11-2.
Jessica Navarro led off the top of the sixth with her second homerun of the evening and cut the Heat lead to eight. In the bottom of the sixth, the Heat answered back with Phelan Wright, Felicity Willis and Samantha Quintaro delivering RBIs. Sherman struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
Toni Mascarenas went three for three with three runs, three RBIs, a double and a homerun. She finished the series seven for ten, including six straight hits. Felicity Willis had a season high three hits, and also hit her second homerun of the season. Every Heat starter had at least one hit, with Jackie Coburn, Jen Martinez, and Cheryl Schaefer each delivering a pair.
Jessica Navarro finished the game three for three with two homeruns, and drove in all three of the Mexican runs. Krystal Marquez, Marcena Bertoldo and Marissa Marzan each provided a hit in the loss. Marzan made the start for the Mexican team, and took her third loss of the series. She allowed seven runs on nine hits in four innings of work.
