With one run in the third and one more in the sixth, that would prove all the support Thunder would need as they squeezed past the So Cal Schutt Hurricanes with a final score of 2-0 to close out the series and move to 28-8 on the season. Thunder starter Piper Marten (Minnesota) tossed a complete game shutout allowing just five hits with three strikeouts. With the win, Thunder takes their fourth consecutive series and stay in strong pursuit of the playoff hunt.
Thunder jumped on the board with their first run in the bottom of the third as catcher Crystal Krebs (UCCS) walked and designated player Erin Evans (OU) followed with a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Kim Nesloney (UH), Krebs made her way across the plate with a timely passed ball. Thunder added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Nesloney reached first on a walk and then advanced to second with her first stolen bag of the day. Third baseman Clare Burnum (Oregon State) then flared a double to left field to plate Nesloney and give Thunder a 2-0 lead.
Marten retired the next three batters in the top of the seventh to take the win while Hurricane starter Taryne Moet took the loss. Make plans to be in attendance next Friday, August 5th, at 7:00 p.m. as two-time Olympic gold medalist Christa Williams (UT) takes the mound for Thunder against the California Sunbirds for an important regular season series match-up.
