TUCSON, ARIZ The Arizona Heat completed the sweep of Saturdays doubleheader with a 9-1 victory over the Mexican National Team. Erica Beach tossed a two hitter, allowing only an unearned run. Toni Mascarenas led the Heats offense, going three for three with a homerun.
Beach hurled her eleventh complete game of the season and picked up her twelfth win in a dominating performance. She allowed only two hits and an unearned run while striking out seven. With the win, Beach now has all three wins this weekend and has yet to allow an earned run in 17 innings of work.
The Heat jumped out to an early lead off pitcher Jessica Navarro, plating two in the bottom of the second. Toni Mascarenas led off with a double and was singled home by Phelan Wright to give the Heat a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Samantha Quintaro doubled home right and the Heat led by two.
The Mexican team got one back in the fourth courtesy of a costly Heat error. After a ground ball was thrown away, Arlene Martinez advanced all the way to third. The next batter, Jessica Navarro singled her home to cut the Heat lead in half.
The score remained 2-1 until the fifth, when Mascarenas blasted a solo homerun to left. Leading 3-1 in the sixth, the Heat added some much needed insurance runs, scoring six in the inning. Quintaro led off with a single and two batters later Cheryl Schaefer singled in a run to put the Heat up 4-1. Nichole Thompson followed with a RBI double and Mascarenas slapped an RBI single up the middle to push the Heat lead to five runs.
Aja Sherman followed with an RBI single of her own and Felicity Willis hit her first homerun to cap off the scoring at 9-1.
Toni Mascarenas, Cheryl Schaefer and Samantha Quintaro had three hits apiece for the Heat. Mascarenas and Felicity Willis each had a homerun and two RBIs. Eight of the Heat starters collected at least one hit and seven had at least one RBI.
