AKRON, Ohio Iyhia McMichaels two-run homer snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Akron to an 8-2 win over the Canadian Elite Team Friday evening at Firestone Stadium.
McMichaels eighth home run of the season came in the bottom of the fifth, after pinch runner Jackie Poggendorf had scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 1-1.
The Racers improved to 24-4 and won their fourth straight game. The Canadian Elite Team dropped its sixth straight game against National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) opponents.
Akron starter Jamie Southern (4-1) worked the first five innings and picked up the win. Canada scored an unearned run in the second frame when Cindy Eadie doubled and scored on an error. Racer pitcher Radara McHugh tossed the final two innings and earned her fourth save. Starter Ashley Lanz took the loss for Canada.
The Racers sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth and batted around again in the sixth. Akron bunched a walk and five consecutive hits to plate four more runs in the sixth. Third baseman Crystl Bustos contributed a two-run single and first baseman Oli Keohohou added a two-run double. Jenny Topping had a 3-for-3 night and is 6-for-6 in two games against Canadian pitching.
Canada scored one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Melanie Matthews.
The Racers and Canadians play again Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
