Houston, Texas-- Texas Thunder battled hard into extra innings against the Venezuelan National Team tonight as they scrapped for one run for a final score of 1-0 to take game three and the series in this regular season match-up. Starter Christa Williams (UT) paced the Thunder for eight complete innings with eight strikeouts to improve her record to 10-3 while third baseman Clare Burnum provided the clutch hitting with an RBI double to plate the only run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Thunder battled at the plate for seven full innings but it took a lead off walk by right fielder Amanda Freed (UCLA) in the bottom of the eighth to start the late inning heroics. Left fielder Kim Nesloney (UH) followed with a hard grounder back to the pitcher but both runners were safe as the Venezuelan second baseman dropped the ball trying to turn the double play. Centerfielder Kristen Zaleski (Texas State) ripped a shot off the pitchers glove in the next at bat to reach first safely, and with a full count and bases loaded, third baseman Clare Burnum (Oregon State) laced a hard liner to right field for the lone RBI of the game to secure the win.
With the victory, Thunder moves to 14-8 in regular season play and improves their winning streak to three games as they take game three and lock up the series win. Williams, the league leader in strikeouts, tossed the complete game shutout while Venezuelan pitcher Mariangee Bogado took the loss.
Thunder will see if they can get the series sweep as they take on the Venezuelan National Team again Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Big League Dreams Sports Park in League City for game four of this regular season series.
