Mendoza Homers Twice as Heat Rout Flames

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat made it a clean sweep of the five game series, by beating the Phoenix Flames 16-3. The Heat used four homeruns and a season high twenty hits to score all their runs in the first four innings. Jessica Mendoza went two for two with a pair of homeruns and five RBIs. Jackie Coburn and Tairia Flowers each added a homerun of their own. Aja Sherman got the start and went four strong innings to pick up the win.

Sherman, just signed by the Heat, got the start on her first day with the team. She allowed only four hits and one earned run while striking out four. Randi Nielson relieved her, allowing one run in her three innings of work.

The Heat bats got started in the first, scoring two runs on a two run single by Stacey Nuveman. The Flames were able to get one run back in the second on a solo homerun by Desiree Williams. In the bottom of the inning, the Heat got the run back, plus a few more. Jackie Coburn led off with a homerun to left centerfield to put the Heat back up 3-1. After retiring the next two batters, Flames pitcher Jessica Hurtado allowed a walk to Lauren Bauer. Jessica Mendoza stepped in, and crushed her sixth homerun of the year over the centerfield wall.

The Heat bats were back at it in the third, plating five more runs.
Tairia Flowers led off the inning with a homerun to put the Heat up 6-1.
After an error and a single, Ladonia Hughes delivered a double down the right field line, scoring another run. Two batters later, Jessica Mendoza hit her second homerun of the game, this time a three run shot to left.
The third inning ended with the Heat leading 10-1.

The Flames were able to get a run back in the fourth on an error by Coburn. However, the Heat would post another six runs in the fourth. The Heat pounded out four consecutive hits, including a two run double by Phelan Wright. Later in the inning, Cheryl Schaefer delivered an RBI single and Nuveman hit a two run double. After an RBI single by Flowers, the Heat took a 16-2 lead into the fifth.

Desiree Williams provided the last run of the game on her second solo homerun of the night.

All eleven Heat batters to step up to the plate had at least one hit, and seven accounted for at least two. Stacey Nuveman had three hits and four RBIs on the night. She finished the series with nine hits, three homeruns and fourteen RBIs. Lovie Jung had three more hits, and Flowers, Wright, Coburn and Hughes finished with two hits each.

Lauren Bauer had one hit on the night, but finished the series 12 for 16 with 10 runs scored. Jessica Mendoza had 11 hits on the series including four homeruns and 13 RBIs.

The Heat will face the California Sunbirds at home next weekend, Thursday thru Sunday. All games are at 7:30 at Hi Corbett Field.
