Riptide Take Second Game from Venezuela

Lowell, Mass.-- The New England Riptide and Venezuelan National Team continued their four game series at Martin Softball Field Friday night.

The Riptide got on the board early as they did the night before. Lisa Iancin started the proceedings with a sharply-hit single to center, then advanced to second on Kristine Botto’s sacrifice bunt, and took third on a Lyndsey Angus ground out.

After Sarah Andersen walked and attempted to steal second, catcher Sofia Pimental overthrew the base allowing Iancin to score and Andersen to reach third.

Ashley Moore came through again by singling Andersen home to give the Riptide a 2-0 lead at the end of one. The score would hold up as a final as Venezuelan pitcher Mariangee Bogado settled down, allowing no more runs and only two Stephanie Best singles and a Sarah Andersen double. The Venezuelan defense also played flawlessly from there, taking away a few potential run-scoring hits from Riptide batters.

Meanwhile Danielle Henderson (4-3) was superb for the Riptide, stiking out 14 and carrying a no hitter into the top of the seventh, when leadoff hitter Ruby Rojas singled between short and third.

There were a few anxious moments after that when Lelis Gomez hit a line single to center sending Rojas to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch The 2000 Olympic Gold medal winner settled down and proceded to strike out the next two batters to give the Riptide the victory.

The two teams play again on Saturday at 7:05 and on Sunday at 5:05 at Martin Softball Field. Saturday is Twins Day. All natural twins or a pair dressed alike are admitted for $5.
