Akron, Ohio-- Crystl Bustos hit two home runs and Jamie Southern tossed a two-hit shutout in her Akron debut as the Racers blanked the Venezuelan National Team, 8-0.
The Racers won their 11th straight game to remain in first place in the
National Pro Fastpitch standings at 13-1.
Bustos crushed a two-run blast down the left field foul line in the bottom of the second inning and followed with another two-run dinger to center in the fourth. The two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist leads the NPF in home runs (eight) and RBI (23).
Five Racers had multi-hit games, including Bustos and center fielder Iyhia McMichael, who each had three hits apiece. McMichael went three for four and
scored two more runs to increase her NPF-leading total to 24. Shortstop Kristin Johnson, designated player Jenny Topping, and catcher Jenn Poore each hit safely twice.
Southern, an All-American at Fresno State, fanned 11 and walked one. Earlier this week, she was named to the 2005 U.S. National Team, along with Topping and left fielder Kelly Kretschman.
First baseman Ruby Rojas had both hits for Venezuela. Starter Yanir Mendoza took the loss.
Game three of the four-game series is slated for 1:05 p.m. Saturday at Firestone Stadium
