Lowell, Mass.-- The New England Riptide extended their winning streak to three tonight with a 2-0 win over the California Sunbirds, behind the combined three-hit pitching of Jocelyn Forest and Danielle Henderson.
Forest (3-1) started and pitched five strong innings, striking out six before yielding an opening walk to Garland Cooper, followed by a double to Melissa Sanchez. That brought in Henderson who was magnificent in relief as she struck out Melissa Wood, got Laura Severson to pop up, and Meagan Denny to ground out to short.
Offensively the Riptide scattered eight hits, but got a few when they counted, starting with two outs in the third when Lisa Iancin doubled and scored just ahead of the throw home on Kellie Wilkerson's single.
They added an insurance run in the fifth when Lyndsey Angus scored on a Rachael McGinnis sacrifice fly after leading the inning off with a walk off Sunbird reliever Denny.
The Riptide are still without the services of Stephanie Best who has missed the first three games of the series with back spasms, but is expected to be back in action for the start of the Texas series on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Riptide will be looking to sweep the Birds at 5:05 tomorrow at Martin Softball Field in Lowell. Father's Day will be celebrated in style as all Dads will pay only $5 with one regular admission.
