Lowell, Mass.--The New England Riptide celebrated their return to Martin Softball Field wilth a convincing 5-1 win over the California Sunbirds behind the two-hit pitching of Danielle Henderson and the offense of Lyndsey Angus (three for three, one walk, and two runs).
Henderson (two for two) had the Sunbirds off-balance all night, as she struck out 10 allowing only a single to right by Michelle Penney in the third and a home run by Melissa Sanchez in the fourth, that at the time tied the game.
Meanwhile the Riptide bats were alive as they pounded out nine hits. Angus got things started in the first when she led off with a single just past the reach of the shortstop, and advanced to second on a Lisa Iancin sacrifice.
Two wild pitches later, Angus crossed the plate with run number one for the Riptide.
After the Sanchez homer in the fourth, the Riptide rebounded, getting the run back when Worcester native Jen Scavone doubled into the left center gap to score Rachael McGinnis who had opened the inning with a single.
The Riptide added one more in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Angus and Iancin, both balls hitting off the wall, missing home runs by only inches.
The Riptide scored their final two in the sixth when Ashley Courtney and newcomer Teri Rooney singled and scored after an Angus walk and Iancin's second hit of the night.
The Riptide continue the four game series with the Birds on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 and a special Father's Day game on Sunday at 5:05 at Martin Softball Field in Lowell.
