Houston, Texas-- The Texas Thunder and the Arizona Heat squared off again on Sunday at Big League Dreams Sports Park to determine the winner of their first regular season series as opponents. The Thunder entered into the contest with a 2-1 lead. Pitcher Michelle Green took the mound for the Heat and Williams got the start again for the Thunder as both teams battled into extra innings.
The Thunder looked to score first when second baseman Lindsay Gardner (Katy HS/UT) singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning. Julie Watson (Cal State) then stole second after she pinch ran for Gardner at first base. Third baseman Clare Burnum (Oregon State) walked to put runners on first and second, but shortstop Adrian Gregory bunted into a five, six three double play. Crystal Krebs (UCCS) pinch hit for catcher Denise Dahlberg (U Hawaii) but ended the inning with a strikeout.
The teams moved into the top of the ninth inning when Heat catcher Jackie Coburn singled to the right side with one out. Shortstop Tara Knudsen then lined a hard hit ball past the leftfielder and reached second base on the error. Coburn managed to score from first and the Heat lead 1-0 in the top of the ninth.
With one out, Thunder right fielder Kim Nesloney (UH) dropped a quick bunt on the inside of the left field line to reach first base safely. She then stole second but Green then convinced both Gardner and Burnam to pop up to the infield to end the game and give the Heat a 1-0 victory.
With the win, Green moves to 2-0 on the year while Williams drops to 2-1 to give the Thunder a .500 record in regular season play. The Thunder looks to bounce back from the loss as they take on the Russian National Team in a 4-game home series next weekend at Big League Dream Sports Park. The first pitch is slated for Thursday, June 16, at 7:00 p.m. on Wrigley Field.
