Akron, Ohio-- First baseman Oli Keohohou belted her second home run of the season and Tobin Echo-Hawk added two hits as the Akron Racers defeated the California Sunbirds, 7-1, in the first of a four-game series.
Keohohou, a standout at both Long Beach State and Brigham Young, also added a double before leaving with a strained hamstring. Her solo home run in the first inning gave Akron the lead for good. Echo-Hawk, an original Racer in 1999, laced two singles in her first appearance of the season.
Pitchers Brandee McArthur and Radara McHugh combined to toss a two-hitter as the Racers improved to 4-1. McArthur, now 3-0, was the Racers ERA leader a year ago at 1.31. Neither pitcher allowed a base on balls.
Louisville, Ohio, product Kelli Metzger tripled and scored to give the Racers a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Crystl Bustos singled and scored in the third to make it 4-1.
Akron added one more in the fourth and two in the sixth. California scored its run in the third on an RBI single by Amanda Kamekona. Erin Downey took the loss for the Sunbirds.
The Racers and Sunbirds meet again Friday at 7:05 at Firestone Stadium.
