TUCSON, Ariz. After losing four games in a row to the Texas Thunder, the Arizona Heat returned home and fell once again to the New England Riptide 5-1 in front of 604 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
The Riptide extended their lead over the Heat by 4.5 games for the fourth and final playoff spot in the NPF postseason.
Arizona got the crowd excited in the bottom of the first inning as Cheryl Bolding hit a double and was brought home by a Becky Turi RBI single.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Heat, the Riptide brought three across the plate in the top of the second inning on a single, a triple and two consecutive doubles off Heat starter Erica Beach (6-6) to make the score 3-1. Beach earned the loss giving up five runs on nine hits. She has lost five of her last six decisions.
New England (21-30) put up two more runs in the top of the sixth to seal the victory over Arizona (16-34).
The Riptide were led offensively by Ashley Moore and Rachael McGinnis both with identical numbers; one run on two hits with two RBIs.
For Arizona, it was Cheryl Bolding leading the way going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Game two is set for tomorrow night at 7:35 with Mo Triner (3-11) expected to start for the Heat.
