SUNBIRDS FALL TO AKRON IN FINAL GAME OF THREE GAME SERIES

Stockton, Calif. – The California Sunbirds dropped the third and decisive game against the Akron Racers, 14-2 on Sunday, July 25. The loss was the Birds fourth in six games and dropped their overall record to 12-28 while the Racers improved their league best record to 25-12.

Striking first in the second inning, the Racers jumped out to a modest two run lead before the Sunbirds responded in their half of the inning with a run of their own to cut the lead to a single run. One run would be as close as the Birds would get in the rubber game of the series as the Racers broke open the game in the fourth inning as they batted around and scored six runs.

The fourth began with a solo homerun to right-center off the bat of Nikki Myers and culminated with the Racers walking around the bases to score the rest of their runs. In an inning that featured six runs, Akron had just three hits while receiving four free passes and another free base on a hit batter. To add to their lead, the Racers posted four more runs in the fifth, batting around for the second consecutive inning, and two more in the sixth to give them a 12 run lead.

The Birds couldn’t find the offensive pop that they had in the previous game as they had just five base runners on three hits. California was able to dent the plate twice, once in the second and once in the fourth to get themselves on the board.

The Sunbirds will be in action next as they begin a three game homestand against the Texas Thunder on Tuesday, July 27. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm.
