MARSHALL BLASTS SUNBIRDS PAST AKRON

Stockton, Calif. – The California Sunbirds took game two of their three game set against the visiting Akron Racers, 3-0 on Saturday, July. 24. With the win the Sunbirds improve to 12-27 on the season while the Racers drop to 24-12.

The Birds broke a seven-game losing streak against the Racers, having lost all seven meetings this season, behind a two homerun night by All-Star catcher Julie Marshall. Marshall put California on the board in the first inning as she drove a two out, 2-2 pitch over the centerfield wall to give the Birds a 1-0 lead. In her next at bat, in the third inning, Marshall took a 3-2 pitch over the left-center wall to give the Birds their third and final run. The homerun put Marshall into a tie for the league lead in homeruns with four on the season. Along with Marshall, Christen Bedwell quietly put together a solid night at the plate going 2-for-3 while driving in the Birds second run of the game in the first inning.

In addition to the offensive output, the Birds sent out Jodie Cox to the circle for the second consecutive night. Cox responded by throwing a complete game, one-hit shutout against the top hitting team and first place Racers. This was her 14th complete game of the season for the Sunbirds. While allowing just the one hit, Cox struck out ten, having at least one in every inning of work.

Despite being unable to get their bats going, the Racers got another strong outing out of Brandee McArthur, who came into the game in relief in the third inning. McArthur went four innings on the night for Akron.

The Sunbirds look to capture their first series against the Racers tomorrow, Sunday, July 25. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm.
