EUGENE, OR - The University of Oregon softball team suffered its first loss of the fall exhibition slate Thursday night by a 5-0 score to the NPF All-Stars at Howe Field.
The group of players from the National Pro Fastpitch league touched Duck pitchers for 10 hits, and scored once in the third and fifth innings, and three times in the seventh.
Duck hitters struck out 15 times, and junior outfielder Allie Burger was the team's lone baserunner with her walk in the third inning.
On the mound for the Ducks, junior starter Jessica Moore pitched the first five innings, struck out seven, gave up seven hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
Freshman Karissa Hovinga worked the final two innings, struck out one, walked none, yielded three hits, and one of her three runs allowed were earned.
The All-Stars scored their first run in the third inning on an RBI double by Duck volunteer coach Sam Marder - a former three-time All-American for Ohio State.
In the fifth inning, the visitors added another run on a solo homer by former UCLA All-American Andrea Duran to left field.
In the seventh, UO gave up its final three runs on three straight hits with two outs. After singles by former Long Island All-American Bianca Meija and Marder, former Husky All-American Jenn Salling singled to right field, and came around to score on a multi-base throwing error on a rundown between first and second base.
Earlier this week as part of its Back to School Tour, the same NPF squad topped Washington, 1-0, and Oregon State, 2-0, in games in Seattle and Corvallis.
The past month, UO beat Corban College, 6-5 and 10-9, in eight innings. Oregon also beat PSU 5-3 in Portland and 13-2 at home vs. the Vikings.
Looking ahead, UO hosts Oregon State on Sunday, October 29 in its final fall exhibition. The doubleheader starts at noon, and offers free admission.
