HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Competing against a squad of former Olympians and collegiate All-Americans, the Southern Miss softball team fell 5-0 in their exhibition against the National Pro Fastpitch All-Stars.
The result was the closest the all-star squad has had since a 2-1 victory over the University of Alabama on Sunday and just the fourth time in nine games that they have been held to five or fewer runs.
"I thought our team played with a lot of energy tonight," said co-head coach Jon Malgradi. "Our pitchers settled in nicely and the way they supported each other really resonated throughout the dugout."
Former Olympian Kelly Kretschman was held hitless on the night while Golden Eagle pitchers Beth Dietrich and Courtney Ramos combined for four strikeouts.
Two fielding errors allowed the NPF squad to score a pair of additional runs but the Black and Gold settled in and had five scoreless innings in the seven inning affair.
Southern Miss returns to the diamond on Oct. 22 when they travel to Starkville to take on Mississippi State for a doubleheader.
