TUCSON, Ariz. Wendy Allens towering home run over the right field wall was not enough as the Arizona Heat dropped game one of their series with Akron 2-1 in front of 553 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
The Akron Racers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With one out, player-of-the-game Brandi Stuart bunted safely followed by a single by Antoinette Armstrong putting runners at first and second. Iyhia McMichael, who leads the league in batting average, singled scoring Stuart. Another single by Nicole Trimboli brought home another run before a diving Nancy Evans catch and a fly-out ended the inning.
Heat pitcher Monica Triner earned the loss, her fourth of the season. She allowed seven hits total. Tarrah Beyster relieved Triner in the fourth inning and shut-out the Racers the rest of the way allowing only one more hit and recorded three strikeouts.
Offensively for the Heat, Allen went 1 for 2 with a homerun, one RBI and a walk. Becky Turi reached base twice in three plate appearances with the help of two errors committed by the Racers. Leaving runners on base is still an area that needs focus as Arizona had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth but were unable to bring anybody home.
Allens homerun gives her two on the season, tied for tops on the team and she extends her team-leading RBIs to seven.
Arizona (9-16) and Akron (14-7) continue their series on Thursday night at 7:35.
