Folden, Finch dig in for groundbreaking of Chicago Bandits new stadium
Rosemont, Ill. - Traditional white hard hats on their heads and golden shovels in their hands, Chicago Bandits catcher Rachel Folden, Owner Bill Sokolis and retired pitcher Jennie Finch dug deep into the pile of top soil with smiles on their faces.
The tossing of the dirt this afternoon by Folden, Sokolis and Finch at the newly named 27 Jennie Finch Way in Rosemont, Ill. signified the start of construction on the brand new $6 million stadium.
“Today’s groundbreaking was monumental on so many levels,” said Bandits General Manager Aaron Moore. “We’re thrilled to be calling Rosemont home and we’re looking forward to being a part of the community. 2011 should be the start of so many great things for the Bandits and women’s fastpitch softball. We now have a true home and we plan to fill it up.”
Dirt and shovels aside, the groundbreaking ceremony marked what will undoubtably be a landmark in the Chicago sports scene. Located just south of Interstate 190 and west of I-294, the stadium is being built to NCAA standards so the ballpark can double as a home for college championships and tournaments, among other various events.
"Chicago and the Bandits have been such a big part of my career. They are both in my heart, and to be honored this way is nothing short of amazing," Finch said. "I am so grateful to have been a Bandit and to have played softball professionally in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch).”
“I am thrilled the team will have a new facility in Rosemont that is a reflection of their talent and professionalism. The team has a bright future, and I look forward to watching many games and cheering on my Bandits!"
Finch was honored further by the city of Rosemont and Mayor Bradley A. Stephens for her contributions to the sport of softball when the Mayor announced the address of the Bandits new stadium would be 27 Jennie Finch Way, in honor of her illustrious career and commitment to the game.
