Walker Nearly Perfect In Win

TUCSON, Ariz. – Leah Braatz hit a sixth-inning RBI single scoring Katie Gutierrez and the Heat defense took care of the rest as Arizona starter Leigh Ann Walker earned her second win of the season 1-0 over first place Texas before 679 fans at Hi Corbett Field.

Walker carried a perfect game into the fifth inning. Texas’ Clare Burnum hit a lead-off double to right field and after striking out Ginger Jones-Powers, Walker gave up a single to right field to opposing pitcher Lindsey Choinard putting runners on the corners with one out. A ground-out to Walker kept Burnum at third and a strike-out ended the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Katie Gutierrez lead-off with a single to right field. She stole second base and Nancy Evans moved her to third on a sac-bunt. With one out and Gutierrez at third base, Braatz smacked the game-winner to right-center field. Braatz gained her second RBI of the season while Gutierrez scored her sixth run of the season.

Walker allowed only three hits while striking out three in her “Player of the Game” performance. The Heat scattered five hits including two by Becky Turi. She also had a double and a stolen base. Gutierrez finished the day going 2 for 3 with a stolen base and Braatz was 1for 2 with a walk and an RBI.

Arizona (9-13) and Texas (13-7) will play the final game of the series Tuesday night at 7:35 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field.
