TUCSON, Ariz. The Arizona Heat scattered nine hits all over the Sunbird defense and gained a 1-0 victory in a game played entirely in 90 degree weather.
Erica Beach allowed only two hits while striking out seven in a complete-game victory, her fourth of the season. Five of the seven strike-outs were change-ups that froze the Sunbird batters and caught them looking.
Erica is amazing, said head coach Debbie Day. Her change-up is beautiful.
Beach needed only one run, provided by a Nancy Evans fifth inning single scoring pinch-runner Rebekah Quiroz, to earn the shutout victory.
My swing feels really good, said Evans. She was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Also helping out offensively were Tamara Ivie and Sara Pickering. They each went 2 for 3.
Arizona was in a must-win situation to avoid being swept at home, a would-be first for the Heat. Instead they gain some momentum for the upcoming series against Texas beginning Sunday.
Its a huge win for us in the aspect of getting the momentum going our way, said Evans.
Evans says they will be aggressive and come out attacking against Texas.
The Heat improves to 8-12 and avoids being the leagues cellar-dwellers, while California drops to 7-13.
