AKRON, Ohio (August 18, 2010) – The Akron Racers look to wrap up the 2010 regular National Pro Fastpitch season on a high note, heading to Florida where they will take on the second place USSSA Pride, August 19-22 in a four-game series. Additionally, the teams will finish July 18th’s rainout which had the Pride leading 2-0 in the fifth.
Akron (23-21) struggled offensively last week, dropping three out of four games against the Tennessee Diamonds in Nashville as Akron’s hitters are currently batting .241 with 285 hits and 133 runs batted in. Crystl Bustos (.315, 23 hits, nine RBI) leads the team with 14 walks while outfielder Trena Peel (.310, 18 hits, nine RBI) and infielder Jackie Pasquerella (.281, 27 hits, 10 RBI) trail close behind. Lisa Modglin’s 17 stolen bases pace both the team and league, her 39 hits are a team best which rank her fourth among NPF batters in addition to tying Samantha Ricketts for the team RBI lead with 19.
The Pride (24-19) jumped into second place after winning three out of five games against the Chicago Bandits last week. Led by a band of Olympians, the three leading batters on the Pride roster include US National Team members Caitlin Lowe (.368, 14 hits, five RBI), Natasha Watley (.353, 36 hits, 0 RBI) and Jessica Mendoza (.310, 31 hits, 21 RBI) while former Olympic standout Kelly Kretschman (.287, 35 hits, 22 RBI) leads the team with 22 runs batted in. The team itself is batting .251 on the season with 288 hits and 153 RBI.
In the circle, the Pride have relied heavily on the arms of Sarah Pauly (12-5) and Desiree Serrano (2-7) in the wake of Cat Osterman and Katie Burkhart’s absence from the diamond. However, the USSSA Pride also added another National standout in Canadian pitcher Danielle Lawrie (3-1) who appears to be acclimating to the professional game quite well, earning a pair of complete game shutout victories against the Bandits.
