TUCSON, Ariz. The California Sunbirds are back in the mix after picking up their second win in a row 4-2 over the Arizona Heat in a come-from-behind victory in front of 624 Heat faithful.
Arizona struck first in the bottom of the fifth when center fielder Cheryl Bolding singled to left field. Katie Gutierrez reached base on an infield single and Wendy Allen moved the runners to second and third on a groundout.
Sunbird catcher Jaime Wohlbach let a pitch get by her and both Arizona runners came home making it a 2-0 game.
California answered back in the top of the sixth. Winning pitcher Jodie Cox walked followed by a single from Kim Ogee and a sac-bunt by Kirsten Voak setting the stage for a Jaime Foutch double to deep right field off the glove of Heat left fielder Becky Turi scoring both runners. Foutch would try to score from second on a single by Cindy Ball but Heat catcher Leah Braatz held on to the ball after a home-plate collision to end the inning.
The Sunbirds would go on to take the lead in the top of the seventh. With bases loaded and no outs, pinch-hitter Brandy Thurman singled scoring one and a fielders choice groundout by Voak scored one more to make the score 4-2.
Heat pitcher Tarrah Beyster allowed five hits and struck-out six in the loss, her sixth of the season. Offensively, Arizona scattered five hits, two by Nancy Evans.
Both teams records are now at 7-12 with game three of the series on Friday night at 7:35.
