Racers Snap Four-Game Losing Streak with Walk-Off Victory
AKRON, Ohio (July 15, 2010) – In the bottom of the seventh inning, catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest’s second home run in as many days provided Akron with all the offense it needed to walk past the USSSA Pride 2-0 in game two at Firestone Stadium.
Akron snaps a four-game losing streak in the process, improving to 13-10 while the Pride falls to 14-10 with tonight’s loss.
Starters Lisa Norris (9-1) and Katie Burkhart (2-5) battled back and forth all day long but the Racers’ patience at the plate paid dividends when it mattered. In the seventh, Jackie Pasquerella drew a one-out walk prior to Vandergeest’s shot to right--her fourth home run on the year to give the Racers a much-needed win this evening.
Norris twirled a gem to earn the win in seven complete innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out seven batters and was clutch atop the seventh to preserve her win. After Caitlin Lowe singled up the middle, a misplayed ball on an Andrea Duran fielder’s choice put runners at the corners for the Pride. Following Duran’s fifth stolen base of the year Norris settled in, getting Jessica Mendoza to strike out before inducing a fly-out and groundout to escape the inning.
Burkhart worked well for the Pride, scattering five hits while striking out six in 6.1 innings of work but gave up two earned runs to take the loss.
Vandergeest paced both clubs with a 2-for-3 day while Crystl Bustos, Pasquerella and Sharonda McDonald each finished with a hit today.
