Stockton, Calif. The California Sunbirds dropped the opening game of their three game home stand against the New England Riptide, 4-3, in eight innings. With the loss the Sunbirds fall to 7-13 overall on the season.
The Sunbirds struck first against the top pitching staff in the league as they plated three runs in the third inning. California starting pitcher, Cindy Ball, helped her own cause as she drove in the first two runs of the game with a two out, bases loaded single to right field. Julie Marshall drove in the third run of the inning with a single of her own, and the Birds would end the inning up three.
Despite getting a good outing out of Ball, California was unable to hold on to the lead, relinquishing a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth which tied the game. Batting in the number nine spot for the Riptide, Tera Knudsen went a perfect 4-for-4 on the night with one Rbi. As the Riptide have become know for their pitching staff rather than their bats, the Riptide ripped 11 base hits on the night, with eight of those hits coming in the final three innings helping them capture the game.
The Sunbirds and the Riptide will be back in action tomorrow, June 28th as they continue their three game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm.
