LOWELL, Mass. The Riptide womens professional softball team, going into Monday (July 5) nights game versus the Arizona Heat at Lowell, had won two in a row, four of their last six, and moved into fourth place in the National Pro Fastpitch league.
New Englands last two victories (4-2 & 2-0) also knocked the Texas Thunder out of first place and into third. The top four teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the NPF post-season playoffs.
The New England Riptide has played and split eight extra innings games (4-4) and lost eight one-run contests. They are averaging 1.5 runs scored per game and yielded an average of 2.0 runs per outing.
New England Riptide ace pitcher Jocelyn Forest (Cal at Berkeley) set a league record June 19, striking out 24 in a 1-0 15-inning triumph against the California Sunbirds. Forest (7-6) leads the league in strikeouts (102), victories (7, tied), and complete games (10). She is second in innings pitched (93.1) and games started (10), sixth in earned run average (1.21).
Left-handed pitcher Leigh Ann Ellis (South Florida) threw the first no-hitter in New England Riptide history, but she lost the July 2 game to the Texas Thunder, 1-0. Ellis (2-5) has the lowest earned run average (1.01) on The Riptides staff.
