ROSCOE, Ill. – Cat Osterman had a lot to do with the Thunder’s 2009 season opening, 3-0 win, over the visiting Akron Racers.
It was her poster night, fans got to see her two medals and she was dominant in the pitching circle for Rockford all night long.
Osterman, who missed all of last season to compete with the United States National Team, struck out 16 Racers (0-1) on her way to the win. She only allowed three hits in the game, two of which were by fellow National Team member Crystl Bustos.
Rockford (1-0) scored the only run they would need in the game in the bottom half of the third inning. Newcomer Jenna Rhodes reached base on an error by starting pitcher Lisa Norris. She would then steal second in front of former Riptide all-star Shanel Scott who would triple to deep left centerfield.
Megan Willis would add some insurance for the Thunder in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run to deep left center field. The home run for Willis was the first of her two-year career.
The same two teams will be back in action tomorrow tonight at Thunder Park in Roscoe for game two of the five-game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and tickets start at just $7 each. Second year pitcher Allison Kime will be in the circle night for the Thunder, while Jamee Juarez will most likely toe the rubber for the Racers.
