AKRON, OHIO - Thursday evening’s game at Firestone Stadium provided
loads of offense early, but eventually the pitching warmed up and took
over the contest. In the end Rockford capitalized on numerous Racer
mistakes to win 3-2.
The mistakes started in the top of the first, Erin Evans singled to
start off the game. She then moved to second on a wild pitch, and
later scored on an error by second baseman Veronica Wootson.
The Racers had something to say about the 1-0 lead though. Wootson
started Thursday night the way she ended Wednesday night, by hitting a
solo home run. Norrelle Dickson then singled and was knocked in by
Kristen Butler’s RBI double to give the Racers the 2-1 lead. The RBI
was Butler’s 27th. However, the Racers would not get another hit
until the seventh, and eventually couldn’t hold off the Thunder.
Despite the first four Racers reaching base safely, Akron could only
muster two runs in the first inning.
Rockford scored again in the third after Erin Evans reached on a
catcher interference call. After Amanda Williams and Lidsey Gardner
walked, Kristen Zaleski walked with the bases loaded and brought in
the tying run, to make the score 2-2.
Then in the fifth inning, the Thunder scored their final run after
Lindsay Gardner singled to lead off the inning. She later scored on a
single by Savannah Brown, making the score 3-2 and clinching the game
Rockford was led by Kristen Zaleski who walked four times and had one
RBI. Savannah Brown was 1 for 3 with a single and an RBI, while Erin
Evans had a single and a walk.
Allison Kime (7-6) pitched a complete game for Rockford, allowing two
earned runs, both in the first inning. She struck out eight and
allowed just four hits.
For the Racers, Veronica Wootson was 1 for 3 with a homerun and RBI,
while Norrelle Dickson was 1 for 2 with a single and a walk. She also
collected a stolen base (11). Kristen Butler doubled and was 1 for 3
with an RBI.
Angela Tincher (12-6) started for Akron and was credited with the
loss. Tincher went the distance, pitching seven innings and allowing
three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits and seven
walks. Tincher also struck out eight.
The Racers will now host Rockford Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. After
Friday’s game, the Racers welcome the Chicago Bandits to Firestone
