Lowell, Ma – The Chicago Bandits took the second game of the four game series at Martin Softball Field tonight by a score of 2-0.
Eileen Canney (9-7) was the hard luck loser for the Riptide, who has now scored only one run in the last two games. Canney pitched well allowing six hits and striking out eight to retake the league lead at 109.
Kristina Thorson (6-5) pitched a bit better for the Bandits. She allowed four hits, struck out four and walked three.
The Bandits jumped to a 1-0 lead as they did the previous night. Canney gave up her first walk of the night, a leadoff walk to Rachel Folden. Jaime Clark singled to left. After a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly by Nicole Trimboli drove in the run.
They stretched it to 2-0 in the top of the fifth when, with two outs, Stacy May hit her eighth home run of the year. This was an inside the park home run, the first ever at Martin Softball Field. The hit went off the center field wall and bounced hard off the wall. Gina Carbonatto had difficulty picking the ball up which allowed May to come around.
The Riptide had runners on base every inning as they picked up four hits, two by Lisa Modglin. In four of the innings the leadoff hitter reached base, but the Riptide were unable to come up with the timely hits as they stranded eight base runners. The Riptide drop to 15-19 on the year while the Bandits are 20-14.
The Bandits series continues at Martin Softball Field on Sunday the 27th and Monday 28th. Monday is Halloween in July. Wear a costume for half price admission (softball uniforms don’t count!) and enjoy spooky games and events.
