NY/NJ Juggernaut Fall Short Despite Amanda Scott’s 2-Hitter

Tucson, Ariz. – In the third game of the Heat series, the Juggernaut lost their first game of the season, 2-1. Amanda Scott, a former NCAA National Champion out of Fresno State University, took the loss for the Nauts in a two hit, four strike out performance. Fielding miscues by the Nauts defense provided the Heat with two unearned runs as Scott dropped to 2-1 on the season.

In the Juggernaut fourth, Carri Leto (1-for-3), the Nauts current batting leader (.458), singled to lead off the inning. Two outs later, Klein smacked a hard single to left field. Nauts manager, Linda Derk, sent Leto from second base and on a controversial call from the home plate umpire; Leto was called out to end the inning. Leto slid around the catcher and reached for the bag, but the umpire said she never hit the base and called her out when Arizona catcher Leah Braatz tagged her on the play.

The Heat got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Scott walked the lead off hitter. With one out, Sara Pickering hit a hard ground ball to second base that went under the glove of Leto and traveled all the way to the outfield fence. Rebekah Quiroz scored on the error by the Nauts second baseman and Pickering advanced all the way to third base. With a runner on third base, pinch-hitter Erica Beach stroked a single up the middle to score Pickering, the eventual game-winning run.

In their usual late attempts, the Nauts got on the board in the seventh inning as catcher Lindsey Collins (1-3) lead off with a double. Collins eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from left fielder, Gina Oaks (0-2, RBI). Germaine Fairchild (0-for-1) had the last chance for the Nauts in the seventh with two outs, but came up short as Leigh Ann Walker finished the game with a strikeout, her sixth of the night.

The first place Nauts (5-1) travel to Houston tomorrow to take on the Texas Thunder (4-2) in a three-game series beginning on Wednesday, June 9th. The YES Network will be broadcasting the Nauts June 13th game versus the California Sunbirds at 7:35 p.m. EDT. Tickets are still available by calling the front office, 973.872.8013 or emailing
